Understanding the Audit Trail

How the audit trail provides legal proof of signing.

What this does

Every signing request has a tamper-proof audit trail that records every action taken — who viewed, signed, and when. This provides legal evidence that signatures are authentic.

What's recorded

  • Document uploaded — timestamp and uploader
  • Request sent — when each recipient was notified
  • Email delivered — confirmation of delivery
  • Document viewed — when each recipient opened it
  • Identity verified — one-time code verification
  • Signature applied — timestamp, IP address, and device
  • Document completed — when all parties finished signing

Viewing the audit trail

  1. Open a completed signing request
  2. Click the Audit Trail tab
  3. View the chronological log of every event
  4. Download the audit trail as a PDF certificate

Tips

  • The audit trail is attached to the final signed document as a certificate
  • IP addresses and timestamps strengthen legal enforceability
  • Audit trails cannot be edited or deleted
  • Keep signed documents for the legally required retention period
