Understanding Contact Types

Learn the difference between leads, prospects, customers, and other contact types.

What this does

Contact types categorise your contacts by their relationship stage. This helps you filter lists, target communications, and track conversion.

When to use it

Assign a type when creating a contact, and update it as the relationship progresses.

Available types

  • Lead — someone who has shown initial interest but hasn't been qualified
  • Prospect — a qualified lead who is a potential buyer
  • Customer — someone who has purchased from you
  • Partner — a business partner or referral source
  • Vendor — a supplier you buy from
  • Other — any contact that doesn't fit the above

Step by step

  1. Open a contact record
  2. Click the Type dropdown
  3. Select the appropriate type
  4. Click Save

Tips

  • Update contact types as deals progress — a lead becomes a customer when a deal is won
  • Filter your contacts list by type to focus on active prospects
  • Use types in reports to measure your lead-to-customer conversion rate
