How to Create a Custom Account

Add a new nominal account to your chart of accounts for more detailed tracking.

What this does

Adds a new account to your chart of accounts. You choose the account code, name, and type. The code you pick determines which category the account falls into and where it appears on your reports.

When to use it

Create a custom account when the default chart does not have a category specific enough for your needs. For example, you might want separate expense accounts for different types of marketing spend.

Step by step

  1. Go to Chart of Accounts from the main navigation
  2. Click Create Account
  3. Enter an Account Code — pick a number within the correct range for the type you want:
    • 1000-1999 for an asset account
    • 2000-2999 for a liability account
    • 3000-3999 for an equity account
    • 4000-4999 for an income account
    • 5000-6999 for a cost of goods sold account
    • 7000-9998 for an expense account
  4. Enter a clear Account Name (e.g. "Google Ads" or "Subcontractor Labour")
  5. Select the Account Type from the dropdown — this must match the code range you chose
  6. Add an optional description to help your team understand what this account is for
  7. Click Save
  8. The new account will appear in your chart and be available when categorising transactions, creating journals, and running reports
